When to Opt for Cosmetic Orthodontics
The truth is that each person’s orthodontic journey and treatment are completely unique. Factors for which treatment you use will depend on your overall dental needs, and your own cosmetic goals. Discussing these options with your orthodontist will be essential to help you feel comfortable with your treatment.
In our office, we often find that teens and adults prefer more cosmetic options. This is natural as they want to look like themselves as they deal with their school, work, and social lives. If you are seeking a cosmetic option, know that there are so many different treatments to choose from!
Should You Choose Cosmetic or Functional Orthodontics?
Typically, functional orthodontics will focus on dealing with dental needs in the most direct and practical way possible. This means if you are struggling with something significant like a large bite problem, also called malocclusion, then the doctor will choose a treatment that is most effective for that problem rather than considering how you will look during treatment.
Cosmetic orthodontics will take your appearance much more into account, and prioritize that when making decisions. The great news is that with all of the different treatment options available now, most patients won’t need to choose between one or the other. Many cosmetic options also are the best option for treating unique problems. Ultimately, you will need to talk to an orthodontist to know what your needs are and which treatment can help solve them!
Treatment Options
Here are a few of the most common treatments that we offer at Williams Orthodontics.
Metal Braces
Some people may consider metal braces to be the ‘old school’ choice for orthodontia, but it’s a classic for a reason. Metal braces are one of the most effective, efficient, and straightforward treatment options to date, and many patients still use metal braces! Falling into more of the functional orthodontic category, metal braces are a good fit for younger kids who aren’t up for the responsibility of taking care of aligners, and for people who have severe bite problems that need to pair braces with other treatments like palatal expanders or rubber bands. As mentioned above, it will take an orthodontist to determine if your teeth or bite will need a functional approach, like braces. But the great news is that even if braces are necessary, you’ve got options!
Clear Braces
One of the most discreet options for people who need braces is clear braces! Made from ceramic, these tooth-colored braces have all the same functional power as metal braces but blend in with your smile so it’s barely noticeable. Many adults and teens enjoy ceramic braces because it doesn’t require any removable pieces that you have to keep track of while aligning the teeth in a super-discreet way.
Note that ceramic braces are slightly more brittle than metal braces, which means you will have to be diligent about avoiding sticky and crunchy foods that can break the brackets or wires. They can also stain more easily and will need to be cleaned well and often to avoid staining. With all these things in mind, they are still a great option that many people prefer!
Invisalign Aligners
Invisalign has become super popular over the last few years for a few reasons. They are easy to wear and care for, they require no permanent attachments to your teeth, they are super effective at aligning teeth, and they are nearly invisible! What’s not to love?! Dr. Williams recommends Invisalign to many of his patients who are ready to have a healthier, straighter smile, and don’t need braces.
Because Invisalign’s effectiveness is entirely dependent upon patient compliance–meaning the patient will need to be responsible for following through on wearing and cleaning their retainer–you should only get Invisalign if you or your child is mature enough. Remembering to take them out while eating and drinking, store them safely, and then always put them back in is something that not everyone is cut out for, especially for kids and some teens. Discuss your options with your orthodontist and see if it would be a great fit for you and your lifestyle.
